What is UV Curing?

Basic Principles

• Role of Photoinitiators: UV-curable materials contain photoinitiators that absorb UV energy when exposed to ultraviolet light. These photoinitiators transition from ground state to excited state and decompose to produce reactive species such as free radicals or cations.
• Initiation of Polymerization: These reactive species initiate polymerization reactions with monomers and oligomers in the material, rapidly transforming the material from liquid or semi-fluid state to solid state.

Common Application Fields

• Coatings Industry: UV-curable coatings can be used for surface finishing on various substrates including wood, metal, and plastic. For example, in furniture manufacturing, UV-curable coatings can form hard, wear-resistant, high-gloss coatings in a short time, improving production efficiency and reducing solvent emissions.

Limiting Factors

• High Light Requirements: Requires sufficient intensity and appropriate wavelength of ultraviolet light, and the light must uniformly reach the material surface. Uneven or insufficient light intensity can lead to incomplete curing, affecting material performance.
• High Material Cost: UV-curable material formulations and production processes are relatively complex, requiring special components like photoinitiators, resulting in higher costs compared to traditional materials.
• Large Equipment Investment: Requires specialized UV curing equipment such as UV lamp boxes and UV curing ovens, with higher equipment prices increasing enterprise investment costs.
